Where Trondheim goes to breathe.
Bymarka is not a distant wilderness. It begins just beyond Trondheim's neighbourhoods and has long been part of everyday local life—a place to walk, ski, gather around a fire and let the pace of the city fall away.
We meet beside the pavilion in Ilaparken and travel to the forest. Our route links Kobberdammen, Baklidammen and Theisendammen through pine and birch woodland, quiet paths and changing views across the water. The walk is approximately seven kilometres and is designed for guests who want a genuine nature experience without a demanding mountain hike.
The lakes hold more than reflections. They belong to the Ilavassdraget water system, shaped over centuries to power mills and later supply Trondheim with drinking water. Walking downstream through the forest is also a journey through the practical history of the city hidden beyond its old streets.
The forest changes. That is the point.
Soft rain deepens the colour of the trees, autumn turns the water gold and cool air makes the warm drink taste better. We adapt the route to the season and trail conditions, but varied Norwegian weather is part of the experience.
